Smith Prospect Research

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you raise money for organizations?
No.  Donors want to feel a direct connection or relationship with an organization and are turned off when someone from outside the organization asks them for money.  Instead, I am behind the scenes giving data to help you build relationships with potential donors.

What kind of information can you find?
Most of the information is about an individual’s personal wealth, corporate information, and giving potential.  Specifically, I try to find information on real estate he/she owns, information about the company the individual works(ed) for, stocks, memberships or directorships of organizations, election contributions, philanthropic donations, and any other relevant information.

Can you find all of this information on anybody?
The amount of information available on an individual is dependent upon how prominent the individual is and how much information has been made available to the public.  Most prospects own real estate, but not everyone owns stock or is the board member of a charitable trust.

What information do you need from us in order to research someone?
As much information as possible.  This is in order to have multiple starting points for research as well as to double check and confirm data.  Usually, the minimum information needed compile an accurate report is an individual’s full name, spouse’s name, address, phone number, and company information.

Is the information you gather 100% accurate?
I try to only provide information that can be confirmed accurate.  However, the data should always be reviewed and used to supplement existing knowledge.  For example, there might be two people on a list with the same first and last name.

Are you paid on (do you accept) commissions?
No. Commission fundraising is generally seen as unethical in the fundraising community.  Donors want to see that their entire donation goes to an organization and get turned off if a consultant or contractor gets a percentage of their gift. One exception to this may be grant writing where the writer’s commission or fee is explicitly stated in how the funds will be used.

Can you guarantee people will donate to our organization?
No. I provide you with the data to prepare and point you in the right direction, but the success of your fundraising is dependant upon building relationships between you and your potential donors.
